Uber is adding a small number of self-driving cars to its San Francisco fleet in order to test the technology before rolling it out to a broader audience.
The souped-up Volvo SUVs can steer, accelerate, brake, and even change lanes. But before you put on your crash helmet: The cars will still have human drivers behind the wheel.
Uber has a track history of bending the rules, and true to form, the company isn’t running its self-driving car test without raising some eyebrows.
California law states that autonomous vehicles must have a DMV permit before hitting the roads. But Uber is arguing that these aren’t autonomous, they’re self-driving, and therefore don’t need a permit.
This could be seen as a boon for the company, as permitted autonomous cars have to provide crash reports, among other things, and that information is public. Without a permit, all that rich information doesn’t need to be shared.
Uber Isn’t the Only Player in Town
First came the Ubers and Airbnbs. Next come the companies that will make it easier for people to enter the sharing economy. And with company valuations ranging in the tens of billions of dollars, the timing couldn’t be better.
